Budak Temerloh terima Biasiswa Nasional

30 top SPM students get national scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR: Thirty outstanding 2009 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students who scored A+ in all subjects are recipients of the inaugural 2010 National Scholarship.

They will pursue studies in the disciplines of their choice at leading universities of the world recognised by the government, said a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

The scholarship was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when he tabled the 2010 Budget in Parliament in October last year to reward students who excelled in their studies.

He said then that the national scholarship would be awarded to 30 creme de la creme students strictly based on merit to enable them further their education in world-renowned universities.

The statement said the students would attend preparatory courses at centres in the country designated by the government.

It said each of these students was required to attain a certain level of excellence at the preparatory course to qualify for studies abroad.

As of this year, the government had decided to sponsor most outstanding SPM students to pursue education for their first degree at leading universities in the country and abroad.

"This sponsorship programme is aimed at providing prestigious scholarships for outstanding SPM students in the effort to produce quality human capital to ensure the nation's continuity capabilities in the future," the statement said.

Gladys Tan, the best student of 2009 SPM, said soon after getting her results on March 11 that her ambition was to become a lecturer in biology or a related discipline. - Bernama.
